This is my first post for 2018 after a hiatus of two months! I took a much overdue holiday at the end of last year. It was great fun but coming into the office once the year began sort of gave me the blues a little, but that’s another story not meant for this website. Pick An Orchid is about ORCHIDS!

So let me welcome the year (a bit late, though) with a stunning Dendrobium thyrsiflorum. This isn’t mine of course, but a show winner. It’s another monster of a specimen. Kudos to the grower for raising it to this size!

Dendrobium thyrsiflorum much prefers cool climates and is not terribly suited to growing in tropical lowlands. The flowers hang off an inflorescence like pine-cones and when all are opened, the entire plant becomes quite a photogenic showstopper.  Enjoy!

The monster Dendrobium thyrsiflorum!

Try keeping a straight face while staring into the ‘compound flowers’.

I often mispronounce this as Dendrobium ‘thirsty-florum’
